born to a middle class japanese-american family, relatively normal life until about ~9. a relative died and was was raised as an undead, eventually leading to the death of most of the remaining family. kanda managed to survive and grow up past this, finishing high school at 18 and voluntarily joining the black order while taking college courses on the side to give himself something else to do. partnered up with alma, and ended up in some college classes with her. did not date, at least not openly, as they knew the millennium corp would take advantage of relationships, but they were fairly close. killed in action at 26. alma was not far behind.

his remains were recovered with the head whole and intact and preserved. regenerative dna extracted from geckos was introduced to his own dna to regrow the missing body parts over the course of several years. afterward, attempts were made to revive him and other cryogenically preserved cleaners using methods similar to what the millennium corp uses, minus the microchip in the brain. he and alma were the only ones successful in the end. during rehabilitation however, alma began experiencing the more severe side effects similar to the millennium corp's raised undead, including spontaneous anger and destructive tendencies. since kanda exhibited these tendencies as well, the scientists decided to simply let them go at each other and kill two birds with one stone. unfortunately, the fight encompassed the entire laboratory and resulted in the death of several scores of personnel.

in exchange for stopping alma, kanda received serious injuries, triggering retrograde amnesia and forgetting pretty much the entire fight and then some. he stays with the Order to find and get revenge on this person who killed her; they don't tell him he's the one who did it. those who know the details are already dead anyway.

it's been 9 years since then. because his body had been frozen and because of the method used to revive him, he doesn't physically age very quickly. also retains ability to regenerate wounds faster as well as limbs, though those take anywhere from weeks to months to years, depending on severity.

because damage on his lungs (from pollution and chemicals in the air) prior to death failed to regenerate properly, he has had his lungs replaced with bio-mechanical counterparts that run on the body's natural fuel. as a result, his breathing and voice are a little on the mechanical/raspy side.

orphan, doesn't remember much of his biological parents or how he was abandoned. found by mana, who lost neah to a failed coup d'état, and taken into the travelling circus mana worked with. mana died in a supposed accident, and cross took over from there. after a bout or so of trauma travelling and being raised by cross, allen was inducted into the Order at 15 and received a biomechanical eye and a mechanical arm. cross took allen out of canada to travel some more and clean up undeads. when he turned 18, he was sent back to hq.

adam believes that allen and/or cross holds the key to neah's current whereabouts, as they don't believe he's completely dead yet.

both parents killed by millennium corp's undead, legs permanently paralyzed due to spinal damage. the order offers her prosthetics on the condition that komui joins their science and robotics division. has been in the order since she was ~7.

apprentice historian (neutral). right eye was badly injured. observing from the order's side for now in exchange for the mechanical eye.

previously partnered with yuu kanda. was close to him and eventually killed in action several weeks after his death. preserved alongside him and went through similar treatment to regrow missing body parts. rehabilitation unfortunately triggered something that set off the destructive tendencies, and she and kanda were forced to fight to the death. or so he believes.

in reality she is still being kept preserved and slowly healing all the wounds received from kanda. her dna is also being used in a test run to enhance the healing of regular humans (tokusa, madarao, tevak, etc).
